We’re here to help you explore the options available to keep you earning and learning.
COVID-19 has proven a challenging time for everyone, including those undertaking training and upskilling. Browse our frequently asked questions to find out more about making changes to your training or employment through the pandemic.
What are my options?
We’ve outlined some frequently asked questions that may apply to you, depending on your situation.
You can apply to change the hours of your training contract. You’ll need to tell us how many hours you and your employer have agreed to you temporarily working.
During this time—if your training provider is still operating—you may be able to attend off-job training. However, check with your employer first as they are still required to pay you (as an apprentice or trainee) for time spent studying.
If work goes back to normal after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, you’ll need to contact our Infoline again to confirm you’ve returned to working your normal number of hours.
Speak with your employer about the options available to help keep you employed.
You and your employer can agree to a training contract suspension, which allows you to recommence work and study when COVID-19 business restrictions are lifted.
The South Australian Skills Commission is also available to help resolve issues regarding your training contract, including suspensions and terminations, and mediate between employer and apprentice/trainee where necessary. For more information, visit South Australian Skills Commission website or contact them on 1800 006 488.
Terminating a training contract should be a last resort. You’re encouraged to discuss other options with your employer first, including a temporary suspension as outlined above around being stood down by an employer.
Other options include flexible rostering (changing or reducing your hours), asking to take paid leave or transferring to another employer that can offer the same on-job experience.
Only the South Australian Skills Commission (SASC) can terminate a training contract. For further information, contact us on 1800 673 097.
If SASC has approved the termination of your training contract, you can register on the Apprentice and Trainee Re-engagement Register. The Register will enable apprentices and trainees from small businesses who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 to connect with prospective employers, find work and continue their training.
